CAROLINE ROSE

Sometimes epic failures produce epic results. With the release of her new album "I Will Not Be Afraid," keen-eyed young singer-songwriter Caroline Rose has broken her long string of short-circuits with a live-wire national debut that draws on her roots in rockabilly, vintage country and blues to capture her unique and personal vision.

Rose joins a new generation of touring songwriters who blend tradition, innovation and edginess, like Hayes Carll, whom she opened for in 2014 and band member Jer Coons, whom Rose shared a bill with one night and discovered to be a kindred spirit. Rose produced "I Will Not Be Afraid" with co-production by Coons at his Burlington, Vermont studio, where they also made Rose’s 2013 self-released America Religious, playing all the guitars, keyboards, harmonica, mandolin, drums and percussion themselves.

CHARLIE SHAFTER

Sometimes you encounter a musical artist for a first time and find yourself experiencing a warm sense of déjà vu – not a feeling that you’ve heard it all before, but a feeling that you’ve reunited with a person you’ve known for ages, someone with whom you share a connection. That’s the vibe conjured up by Charlie Shafter, a young singer-songwriter with an old soul – and a knack for forging a connection with just about anyone who crosses paths with his songs.

On his self-titled debut album, the 26-year-old Shafter weaves 10 richly-toned tales that recall iconic writers such as Townes Van Zandt and Elliott Smith, songs that range into acoustic blues and the grittier side of country-rock on a panoramic trek through blue-highway Americana. Shafter doesn’t write songs that grab you by the lapel and shake you into listening; they’re more likely to throw an arm around you and whisper their way into your consciousness.

Description:

“Wanna wake up wanting to listen to records / But those old feelings elude me / I raise a toast to the rock n’ roll ghost,” sings Cymbals Eat Guitars frontman Joseph D’Agostino on the hyper-adrenalized “XR,” which sounds like a Tonight’s the Night outtake recorded at triple speed, with its braying harmonica and spitfire vocal delivery. It’s the track that perhaps best captures the spirit of the band’s third LP, LOSE, one of coping with abject loss and grief by rediscovering what you’ve always loved, as difficult as it may be—the redemptive power of music. For D’Agostino, this entailed coming to terms with his best friend and musical collaborator Benjamin High, who passed away suddenly seven years ago, just as Cymbals Eat Guitars began recording in earnest.

Army officer paints watercolor of Kiowa Chief

On this day in 1845, army officer and explorer James William Abert visited the village of Kiowa Chief Dohäsan in the Texas Panhandle. Abert commanded a party of some thirty-three men assigned to explore the Canadian River region in the summer and fall of 1845. The young lieutenant made several sketches and watercolors of activities at Bent's Fort, of native animals, and of outstanding Indians, including Dohäsan. Dohäsan had become principal chief of the Kiowas in the spring of 1833. His likeness was painted at least twice, by George Catlin in 1834 and by Abert in 1845.

Emma loses out to Crosbyton as county seat

On this day in 1910, Crosbyton defeated Emma in an election to determine the Crosby County seat by a vote of 198 to 120. The once prosperous town of Emma traces its origins to the fall of 1890, when R. L. Stringfellow and H. E. Hume, owners of a general store in Estacado, purchased a section of land in the central part of the county. In 1890 a post office opened, and in 1891 Stringfellow and Hume laid out a town on this site and named it Emma, after the woman that one of them later married. Emma replaced Estacado as county seat in October 1891.

Wood County dams completed

On this day in 1962, whether by accident or design, the dams of two small Wood County lakes were completed. Lake Hawkins and Lake Winnsboro, formed respectively by Wood County Dam No. 3 and Wood County Dam No. 4, were both made for recreational and flood-regulation purposes. Impoundment of water had begun in both lakes the same summer. Lake Hawkins has a surface area of 776 acres; Lake Winnsboro, of 806 acres.

If you enjoy this lens or find it to be useful and informative, please rate it up at the very top of the page! Denton, Texas is a Main Street City that tops a triangle formed by itself, Ft. Worth and Dallas. This area is traditionally referred to as the Golden Triangle and our largest shopping mall shares this name.Established in 1857, Denton is the county seat of Denton County, and was named for John B. Denton. John Denton was a lawyer, preacher, and a soldier. His grave is on the courthouse lawn in the center of Denton's historic downtown square. The center-piece of the downtown square is the old Denton County Courthouse which was erected in 1896 and restored in 1987. The courthouse contains a museum highlighting historic photographs and artifacts from the City's founding to the present. Denton is the proud home of two public Universities; Texas Woman's University and the University of North Texas, the 3rd largest university in the State of Texas, with a combined enrollment of approximently 40,000 students. Denton is also the home town of Grammy Award winning band Brave Combo and the Grammy Award winning 1 O'Clock Lab band as well as the former stomping grounds of UNT alumni Don Henley, Roy Orbison and Pat Boone.
